Dr. Werntz has 25 years experience in all phases of Occupational Medicine. His current practice focuses on FAA Medical Examinations for Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers, Black Lung Examinations, DOT Medical Examinations, Respirator Medical Clearance, and medicolegal consulting & testimony for workplace exposures and injuries and community exposures. [NOTE: Dr. Werntz is not currently accepting new medicolegal consulting cases.]
Dr Werntz is a designated "413b" examiner, authorized to perform Department of Labor (DOL) examinations for Federal Black Lung benefits. These exams are performed at Preston Memorial Hospital in Kingwood, WV.
Miners wishing to be examined must first apply to the US Department of Labor, then select Dr. Werntz as their preferred examiner.
While miners may apply to DOL directly, it generally goes better when the miner works with a Black Lung Benefits Counselor can assist a miner with filing their claim and then guide the miner through the process. Black Lung Benefits Counselors are funded directly by the federal government, and their assistance is available at no cost to the miner. Benefits Counselors can provide guidance on both federal and state black lung benefits. The closest Black Lung Clinic is at the Preston-Taylor Community Health Centers, Inc. clinic near Newville. UMWA miners can also apply through the UMWA legal benefit - their attorney provides similar assistance filing and provides guidance throughout the claim process. To access this service contact your Union business office.
Dr. Werntz is an approved Independent Medical Examination (IME) provider for WV Workers' Compensation carriers. He can provide examinations for permanent impairment assessment, treatment redirection, claim status, and restriction assessment. IMEs are scheduled and paid for by the Workers' Compensation Carrier, and cannot be scheduled by the claimant/worker. [Note: Dr. Werntz does not perform IMEs for legal matters outside of Workers' Compensation]
