Clinical Examinations

Dr. Werntz is a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner, and can perform 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class medical evaluations, as well as FAA employee examinations.

Dr. Werntz is dedicated to working with pilots with medical conditions get approved.  This includes helping the pilot provide the needed medical information to give pilots the best chance of getting the FAA to "yes".  

NOTES: 
1)  You MUST complete the FAA's MedXPress process prior to your examination, including creating an account and entering your medical history information.  Please BRING YOUR CONFIRMATION NUMBER to your appointment.
2)  If you are currently under a Special Issuance PLEASE bring a copy of your special issuance letter from the FAA, plus whatever records/testing are required by your Special Issuance so that your certificate can be issued.
3) Payment in full is required at the time services are being performed - FAA exams cannot be billed to insurance.
4) All exams include (1/1/2025 compliant) computerized color vision screening - when indicated

1st Class - Includes ECG when necessary - $165

2nd Class - $100

Dr Werntz is a designated "413b" examiner, authorized to perform Department of Labor (DOL) examinations for Federal Black Lung benefits.  These exams are performed at Preston Memorial Hospital in Kingwood, WV.  

Miners wishing to be examined must first apply to the US Department of Labor, then select Dr. Werntz as their preferred examiner.

While miners may apply to DOL directly, it generally goes better when the miner works with a Black Lung Benefits Counselor can assist a miner with filing their claim and then guide the miner through the process.  Black Lung Benefits Counselors are funded directly by the federal government, and their assistance is available at no cost to the miner.  Benefits Counselors can provide guidance on both federal and state black lung benefits.  The closest Black Lung Clinic is at the Preston-Taylor Community Health Centers, Inc. clinic near Newville.  They can be reached at (304) 892-2850.  Be certain to ask for Sarah in the Black Lung Clinic.

UMWA miners can also apply through the UMWA legal benefit - their attorney provides similar assistance filing and provides guidance throughout the claim process.  To access this service contact your Union business office.

Dr Werntz is available to support OSHA programs, including Respirator Medical Clearance, Silica Programs, Lead, Asbestos, Commercial Motor Vehicle operators (DOT exams), and (Research) Animal Workers (AAALAC).

Dr. Werntz is an approved Independent Medical Examination (IME) provider for WV Workers' Compensation carriers.  He can provide examinations for permanent impairment assessment, treatment redirection, claim status, and restriction assessment.  IMEs are scheduled and paid for by the Workers' Compensation Carrier, and cannot be scheduled by the claimant/worker.  [Note:  Dr. Werntz does not perform IMEs for legal matters outside of Workers' Compensation]
